Dereliction.

about

Failure terrifies me. To help myself confront it, I make songs about a future where I have failed, and sit at length in that space (while littering the song with small technical failures). At this point, I feel like failure would come from abandoning what I’ve built and am still building. Failure would come in the form of dereliction.

Unfortunately, creating from this space kept reminding me of our country. I had to ask myself: “am I singing about a potential self lost through choices sending me down the wrong path, or an ideal country ruined by failed elections?”

If you ever need to confront your failures, sing from the space of this song. Then continue with your day as you were.

This is my second Failure Song.

lyrics

Lyrics:
I haven’t changed anything since I left you there.

Will spirits call as rain still falls - wind will send me everywhere.
Search to find and seek to see
Maybe what was - or what could be

But I (still) haven’t changed anything since I left you there.

Ancestor come and visit me - ancestor come commune with me
and clean me and show me why I haven’t changed at all.
The stain is still (t)here.

Old me or country?
Dereliction. Failed election of a path
Scattered winds - failed polymath

Dereliction. All that’s left is looking back.

And if I die before you wake
Just know there’s nothing here to take.

Cause I haven’t

Changed anything
[{( Since I left you there. )}]
